As London’s population and workforce continue to expand and the way in which we live, work and connect is changing, the need for reliable data on people’s travel patterns and freight movements are vital to ensure that Transport for London (TfL) can respond to current and future transport needs.

ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳, in collaboration with Jacobs and Telefonica (O2), worked closely with TfL to deliver Project EDMOND (Estimating Demand from Mobile Network Data) to update its strategic transport models with new information on travel patterns for all modes of transport across London.

The project used anonymised and aggregated mobile phone data derived from 250 billion mobile phone connection events, allowing new innovative approaches to understand travel behaviour and replace traditional survey methods which were expensive, disruptive and unreliable. This data, combined with a variety of other datasets from TfL and other sources, was analysed and processed to understand where, when, how and why a total of 395 million journeys were made over a three-month study period. The data was then converted into a format allowing TfL to update its transport models, to provide evidence underpinning its policy decisions, transport strategies and major scheme business cases.

A leading-edge solution for TfL’s transport data needs was achieved. Based on this and other experience, ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ has also recently written associated guidance for the Department for Transport.
